Movie Review: The Lego Movie
I have never really been a fan of Legos when I was a kid. I never really got into building things like spaceships, pirate ships, or skyscrapers. However, that didn't stop me from watching "The Lego Movie".
The movie centers around a guy named Emmet, a construction worker who lives in an ordinary town, with ordinary people. Emmet lives each day with a smile on his face, and a positive attitude that cannot be stopped. He knows everyone, and loves his job. But just when everything seems to be going according to plan, he accidentally stumbles upon the one thing that can change his life forever. Throughout the film, Emmet is on an incredible journey across different dimensions to save his world from the hands of Mr. Business, an evil tyrant who plans on gluing the universe together.
I want to start this off with stating that this movie is one of the funniest movies I have seen in quite some time. At least, appropriately funny. Either case, I was laughing my butt off. Emmet (voiced by Chris Patt) was an absolute blast to watch. He starts off not knowing what he's doing, to ending up trying to save the world. Some of the things he would say was funny, and other things he would say was just dumb. But he still had me laughing for a long time. The rest of the voice-acting cast was fantastic. Elizabeth Banks did a terrific job as Wyldstyle, Will Arnett nailed his role as Batman, and who can forget Will Ferrel as the evil Mr. Business? The cast did a fantastic job with their characters, sounding really into their independent roles.
The animation was another awesome component of the film. It's absolutely beautiful, with every glimpse of light and every plastic character looking astounding. But what I really enjoyed about the film, was it's unpredictability. As I watched the film, I wasn't too impressed with what I was watching. Yeah, it was funny; but it all felt like a pretty pointless story. It wasn't really mixing well, and I was starting to wonder if it ever would. Fortunately, in the last 20 minutes of the film, everything finally made sense and blended together very nicely.
The overall message of the movie was also something to notice. It's that everyone, in some unique way, is special. It doesn't matter who you are, or what you do, no matter what you're special. Throughout the film, Emmet feels like all he does is mess up, and starts to believe that he isn't "The Special" that he was supposed to be."The Special" is the one MasterBuilder that can stop Mr. Business from gluing the universe together. It's the confidence and drive that Emmet needs to fulfill his destiny, and to save the universe.
With that being said, I really enjoyed "The Lego Movie". It was extremely funny, beautifully animated, and even though everything didn't really mix well until near the end, it still had a terrific message. It's a movie that anyone can watch and enjoy, and it's definitely recommended if you want to get a good laugh.
Overall: 9/10
