The Fight Against Racism Continues
Recently, headlines and news reports have been surrounding the National Basketball Association (NBA) . It isn't because of the playoffs, it isn't because of LeBron James or Kevin Durant. It's about the racist phone call from Donald Sterling, former owner of the Los Angeles Clippers.
Fort those of you who haven't heard the phone call yet, you can search it on Google or YouTube and I'm sure you will find it. It isn't funny, but extremely hurtful to African-Americans across the United States, as well as around the world.
I'll admit, racism isn't nearly as bad as it used to be back in the mid 1900's. In fact, I can't recall a racist action that has gotten this much publicity in quite some time. It may hurt to listen to the phone call, but what hurts more is this: Racism hasn't gone away.
All my life, I have grown up with the belief that all people created by God are equal. It is a belief that I strongly stand by, no matter what. It doesn't matter what skin color you have, a person is a person. When I look back in history, with fatal incident like the Emmet Till story, or the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., I can't help but shutter. It's not only saddening to hear such tragedies, but sickening and embarrassing. To think that some people actually believe that whites are "the dominant race" is completely mind blowing. It's completely arrogant, and despicable. I am no better of a person than an African-American. We both have eyes, teeth, ears, feet, and most importantly...feelings.
I'm ashamed to look back at the awful incidents that African-Americans had to go through all of those years ago. It's not only disturbing, but ridiculous. Fortunately, such incidents that happened in the past hasn't happened in the last decade or so. However, racism is obviously still an issue.
Donald Sterling's phone call is the awful reminder that racism is still alive. You're basketball team is predominantly African- American, the coach for that team is African-American, even the president is African-American. Is that the kind of respect and gratitude you show to your team for making it into the playoffs? I'd imagine as an owner for a basketball team, he would show a lot more pride into his organization. It's with a happy heart that I inform you that Donald Sterling is officially banned from the NBA, for life.
Even today, racism is still a major issue. Perhaps it isn't as big of an issue that it used to be, but it's still very much alive. The fight against racism is still underway, so it's time for the people of this Earth to understand what equality really means. All people, from every country, is a person. There is no difference from any of us. America needs to let go of such silly beliefs in white supremacy, and understand the fact that African-Americans are just as much of a human being as white people.
