Move over, "The LEGO Movie". Somebody just took your spot for Best Animated Film of the Year.
The film takes place 5 years after the events of the first film. Hiccup has gotten old enough to where his father, Stoic, believes that he's ready to be chief of Berk. Hiccup doesn't think so, and he continues to try and get out of the conversation. Now, Berk has become a home for dragons, where they are fed and loved. However, somewhere outside of the village, is an evil tyrant that is building a dragon army. With help from his friends, father, and Toothless, Hiccup sets off on the biggest adventure of his life (so far...).
"How To Train Your Dragon" was a fantastic movie. If "Toy Story 3" didn't release the same year that it did, it would've been a shoe-in for best animated film. With everything that the first film did right, "How To Train Your Dragon 2" does it better.
The story itself was interesting. It kept me entertained throughout the whole duration of the film. What was really intriguing, was how much the story continued to unfold the further you get into the movie. I mean, yeah there's a bad guy who's making a dragon army to destroy anyone who opposes him, but the story gets MUCH deeper and complex than that. It just made the film more enjoyable and interesting.
Animation was stellar. That's probably an understatement, but I don't think that there's any other word to put it. There were certain shots in the movie that I thought were live action, due to how amazing it looked. DreamWorks did a fantastic job with how the movie looked, and sounded.
One of the best things about this sequel is how much the characters have grown and formed. Hiccup, who used to be this scrawny and shy little kid, is now growing up and becoming a man. He has adopted a more confident attitude, which is really nice to see. Astrid and Stoic both have shown changes to their attitudes, being more open and understanding to Hiccup. It really shows how much Berk has changed in the last 5 years, and it's awesome.
What was extremely surprising about the first film was how emotional it was. It got me feeling for Hiccup and his struggles to persuade his father that dragons were good creatures. As great as it was, the sequel takes the emotional element to a whole other level. Tears were shed during this movie, and there's no shame in that. The story just got deeper and deeper the further you get into the film.
Lastly, what made this movie so fantastic was how Hiccup's relationship with Toothless was not only stronger, but tested. Their friendship has only grown since the first film, and it's awesome. It's possible that you'll feel a stronger connection with your pet after watching the movie, because the connection Hiccup and Toothless have is incredible.
I loved everything about "How To Train Your Dragon 2". The story and plot were terrific, animations were stunning, it hits the viewers emotionally, and it's just a blast from beginning to end. There are twists that you won't see coming, and there are moments you wish that wouldn't end. I would go so far as to say that "How To Train Your Dragon 2" could possibly be one of the best animated films of this generation. Like, it could be "The Lion King" of this generation. What was the worst thing about the film? When it ended...yeah, I didn't want it to end.
