Disney isn't extremely known for their movies outside of animation, but "Maleficent" proves that they have what it takes to work outside of their comfort zone.
"Maleficent" tells the tale with a twist of the most iconic villain in Disney history. Starting off as an honest, good-hearted fairy, Maleficent lives her life with kindness towards all creatures. However, during this time, humans and fairy-tale creatures weren't exactly co-existing well with each other. As the war continues, Malefient meets a seemingly nice young boy, and they instantly click with one another. However, she soon realizes the cruelty and pain the humans can bring, and her pure heart is tainted with anger and blackness. Maleficent is then feared by beings around her, and she intends to make her mark on the humans that caused her pain.
"Maleficent" wouldn't be close to the movie it was if Angelina Jolie wasn't the evil fairy, herself. Her performance was incredible, even spooky at times. She was the perfect fit to play the role, and she delivered. Put her aside, and the rest of the cast didn't do too bad. Was it anything remarkable? Not really, but it definitely got the job done.
What I liked most about the film was the twist in the story. You are shown to a different side of Maleficent, and her motives for the things that she's done. It made sense, and it created a unique concept to the plot. Instead of being introduced to an evil lady that has horns and wears all black, you see all of the goodness that Maleficent once had, and how she unfortunately turns for the worse.
Although the story and overall plot was interesting, there was a major problem with the film. With so much tension and emotion going on, I thought the movie would stay that way. Unfortunately, the film ended up slowing itself down, and that was a bummer. There was a point in the film where it just became uninteresting, and it disappointed me because the film had so much potential to continue being energetic. Things were getting built up, and it was exciting, but then everything just slows down. It felt inconsistent, and the overall flow just didn't got blend well. Did it make the movie unbearable? Of course not. It was just unfortunate.
With great animations, and an incredible performance by Angelina Jolie, "Maleficent" was fun to watch. I had the potential to be better, but the film hurt itself by building up and then just slowing down. I wish it could've stayed as interesting as it started, but I still had a nice time watching the movie.
